Uric Acid Test

Overview

The body produces uric acid as a waste product when it breaks down purines (a compound found in foods). Most of the uric acid is dissolved in your blood and goes to your kidneys. From there, it exits your body via your urine. If your body makes too much or doesn’t discharge enough uric acid, it can cause crystals to form in your joints. These crystals are called gout. Gout is a form of arthritis that affects the joints and causes painful inflammation. If you have high uric acid levels, you may be more likely to develop kidney stones. Hyperuricemia may also worsen chronic renal disease or increase the risk of developing it. High uric acid levels can lead to other problems, including kidney failure. It’s often tested in patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation. It can also be used to identify the source of recurrent kidney stones and diagnose gout.

Frequently Asked Questions

The uric acid serum test is done to measure the level of uric acid in the blood. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as gout, kidney stones, and certain kidney and liver disorders.

The uric acid serum test measures the concentration of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines, which are found in certain foods and are also produced by the body. Elevated levels of uric acid can indicate conditions such as gout, kidney stones, or kidney and liver disorders.

During a uric acid serum test, a healthcare provider will draw blood from a vein in your arm using a needle. You may feel a slight pinch or sting during the blood draw. The blood sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Typically, no special preparation is required beforehand.

High uric acid levels can indicate conditions like gout, kidney stones, kidney disease, or medication side effects. Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, medication, or addressing underlying health conditions. Consulting a healthcare provider is important for proper management.

The normal range of uric acid in the blood is typically:

  • For men: 3.4 to 7.0 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)
  • For women: 2.4 to 6.0 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)
