TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Overview

The thyroid gland produces a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), also known as thyroid stimulating hormone (THI) or thyroidotropic hormone (THI). This hormone works by stimulating the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones – T4 and T3. These hormones are necessary for the growth and metabolism of the body. The TSH ultrasensitive test is one of the most accurate and reliable tests for thyroid function. U-TSH stands for ultra-sensitive thyroid stimulating hormone, which means it is more sensitive and faster than the TSH test.

The U-TSH test detects the presence of primary hyper thyroid disease or hypothyroid disease, and can be used to calculate thyroid hormone (TRH) or track people on thyroid replacement therapy. Symptoms of hyper thyroid disease are: Weight loss Rapid heartbeat Shivering Sweating Anxiety Increased sensitivity to cold Coldness Fatigue Slow heart rate Dry and thin hair

Frequently Asked Questions

The TSH test assesses thyroid function by measuring levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. It helps diagnose thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, monitors treatment effectiveness, and screens for abnormalities, especially in high-risk populations.

The TSH test measures the level of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone in the blood. This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and regulates the thyroid gland's production of thyroid hormones, T3 and T4.

During a TSH test, expect a blood draw from a vein in your arm. The procedure is quick and relatively painless. Results typically take a few days, after which your healthcare provider will discuss any findings with you.

If TSH results are present, they indicate thyroid function. Abnormal levels may suggest thyroid disorders. If absent, it could mean the test wasn't conducted or there's a technical issue. In either case, consult your healthcare provider for interpretation.

Thyroid hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are produced by the thyroid gland. They regulate metabolism, growth, and development throughout the body, influencing functions such as heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels.
