Proteins are made by the breakdown of an amino acid (homocysteine). Vitamins B12, B6, folic acid help break down this amino acid and convert it into the other substances needed by the body. A homocystein serum test is used to measure how much of this amino acid is in your blood. High levels of this amino acid in your blood can be a sign of vitamin B deficiency. It can also be a sign of heart disease or a rare genetic disorder called homocysteinuria. If your blood contains too much of these amino acids, it can cause damage to your arteries and lead to the formation of blood clots. If your blood contains too many of these clotting factors, it can be a sign that you have a vitamin deficiency.
