ESR Automated Blood Test

Overview

ESR stands for erythrocyte sedimentation rate. An ESR test detects inflammation in your body. The immune system reacts to infections and injuries by producing antibodies. The increased protein content of antibodies in plasma causes the erythrocytes to clump and aggregate together. In order to measure ESR, the patient’s blood sample is taken in a test tube with a thin lining. The test tube is designed to measure the rate at which the blood cells fall to the bottom of the test tube.

In healthy blood cells, the fall of blood cells is slow. However, in cases of inflammation, blood cells tend to stick together, forming a stack or roulette. A stack of blood cells will drop faster because it’s heavier than a single healthy blood cell. An ESR test therefore measures the inflammation level in your body.

Why is an ESR Automated Blood test done?

  • Severe headache
  • Unexplained fever
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Stiffness in joints
  • Pain in the neck
  • Pain in shoulders
  • Appetite loss
  • Anaemia

Frequently Asked Questions

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) blood test is often performed to detect inflammation in the body. It measures the rate at which red blood cells settle in a tube over a specified time, which can indicate the presence of certain inflammatory conditions.

An ESR automated blood test measures the rate at which red blood cells settle in a tube over a specified time. This sedimentation rate can indicate the presence and severity of inflammation or certain inflammatory conditions in the body.

During an ESR automated blood test, a healthcare professional will draw blood from a vein, usually in the arm. The blood sample is then placed in a special tube and analyzed by an automated machine to determine the sedimentation rate.

The results of an ESR automated blood test indicate the rate at which red blood cells settle in a tube over a specified time. Elevated levels may suggest inflammation or certain inflammatory conditions, while normal levels typically indicate the absence of significant inflammation.

The normal range for erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in an automated blood test can vary slightly depending on factors like age and gender. Generally, for adults, normal levels are often below 20 millimeters per hour (mm/hr) for men and below 30 mm/hr for women.
