Calcium Test

Overview

Calcium is a mineral that is present in your bones, teeth and blood. Although the majority of calcium is in your bones and teeth, a small percentage of it is also present in your blood which is essential for the functioning of your systems. Calcium is found in your blood in two forms. It is attached to proteins in your blood and it is also ionised or not attached to your blood proteins. A calcium test measures the amount of calcium (both bound and free) in your blood.

Having an adequate amount of calcium in your blood is essential for the proper functioning of your muscles, your heart, and your nerves. It helps in the circulation of blood through your blood vessels and helps in the release of certain hormones throughout your body. Too little or too much calcium in your blood can lead to thyroid /parathyroid disorder, bone disease, kidney disease, malnourishment, and many other conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Calcium Total Serum test is done to measure the total amount of calcium in the blood. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions related to calcium levels, such as bone disorders, kidney disease, parathyroid gland disorders, and certain cancers.

The Calcium Total Serum test measures the total amount of calcium in the blood. This includes both bound and unbound forms of calcium. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions related to calcium levels, such as bone disorders, kidney disease, parathyroid gland disorders, and certain cancers.

During a Calcium Total Serum test, a healthcare professional will draw a blood sample, usually from a vein in your arm. You may feel a slight prick when the needle is inserted. Once the sample is collected, it is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

If the Calcium Total Serum results are present, it means that measurable levels of calcium were detected in the blood. This could indicate normal levels or abnormalities related to calcium metabolism, such as hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia.

If the results are absent, it could suggest an error in the test or extremely low levels of calcium, which would be unusual. In such cases, healthcare providers may repeat the test to confirm the results or investigate further.

After a calcium blood test, you can typically resume your normal activities. If you experience any discomfort or bruising at the site where the blood was drawn, you can apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you and may recommend further tests or treatment depending on the findings.
