Calcium Test

Overview

Calcium is a mineral that is present in your bones, teeth and blood. Although the majority of calcium is in your bones and teeth, a small percentage of it is also present in your blood. Calcium is found in your blood in two forms. It is attached to proteins in your blood, and it is also ionised, or not attached to your blood proteins. A calcium test measures the amount of calcium (both bound and free) in your blood. Having an adequate amount of calcium in your blood is essential for your body to function properly. Calcium helps your muscles, your heart, and your nerves to function. It also helps your blood to move through your blood vessels. Calcium also helps your body to release certain hormones. Too little or too much calcium in your blood can cause thyroid /parathyroid disorder, bone disease, kidney disease, malnourishment, and many other conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Calcium Total Serum test is done to measure the total amount of calcium in the blood. It helps diagnose and monitor conditions related to calcium levels, such as bone disorders, kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, and certain cancers.

The Calcium Total Serum test measures the total amount of calcium in the blood. This includes both ionized (free) calcium and calcium bound to proteins such as albumin. It helps assess calcium levels in the body, which are crucial for bone health, nerve function, muscle contraction, and other physiological processes.

During the Calcium Total Serum Test, a healthcare provider will draw blood from a vein in your arm. You may feel a slight pinch or discomfort when the needle is inserted. After the test, there might be mild bruising or soreness at the puncture site, but these effects are usually minimal and temporary.

If the Calcium Total Serum test results are present, they indicate the level of calcium in the blood. Abnormal results may require further evaluation. If results are absent, it could indicate inconclusive findings, necessitating a repeat test or additional investigation.

After your calcium blood test, you can resume normal activities immediately. Your healthcare provider will interpret the results and discuss them with you. Depending on the findings, they may recommend further tests, treatment, or lifestyle changes if needed.
